Nina Simone
Nina Simone (1933-2003) was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in North Carolina. She was the sixth of seven children.
Nina began playing piano at age 4. She studied the instrument at New York's prestigious Juilliard School of Music, a rare opportunity for a black woman in the 1950's. Simone is famous for her jazz, soul, gospel, and civil rights songs. In the late 1950's Simone recorded her first tracks.
