1) Alicia Keys: As I Am
Two years in the making, Alicia Keys has released another appealing collection of songs: "As I Am."
After listening to the 14 tracks, it's clear that Alicia has remained faithful to her R&B roots. There's lots to like here.
To my ear, her solo efforts on this record are more magnetic than some of the collaborations she indulges in.
The song "Lesson Learned" features the talent of John Mayer.
Rolling Stone offers this observation about the new Alicia Keys CD..."the twenty-six-year-old's third studio album envisions a hip-hop generation ready for its own Roberta Flack. The prevailing mood is reflectively soulful."
I'd definitely take that as a compliment.
Billboard is even more direct. "Alicia Keys' considerable talents are no secret six years after her auspicious debut, "Songs in A Minor." However, those gifts shine with a ripening maturity and depth on her third studio outing."
"From the opening strains of the classical overture that introduces this aptly titled album, Keys continues to fearlessly resist the cookie-cutter norm."
"As I Am" is another winner from Alicia Keys, a young performer with multi-generational appeal.
See Alicia Keys on The American Music Awards, Sunday, November 18, 2007, 8pm Eastern, on ABC TV.

6) Still Grazing: The Musical Journey of Hugh Masekela
Still Grazing: The Musical Journey of Hugh Masekela
Hugh Masekela and D. Michael Cheers, Crown Publishers
----------
“Still Grazing” is not just an autobiography. It’s also a mesmerizing account of apartheid South Africa and her townships filled with violence, hardship and resistance to the oppressive apartheid system.
Masekela’s musical journey begins in the 60s, when at 17 he received a trumpet sent by Louis Armstrong.
With the assistance of Miriam Makeba and Harry Belafonte, Masekela was spirited out of South Africa to New York City where he was enrolled in the Manhattan School of Music.
His natural gift for music led him to opportunities to make friends with some of the most notable names of the times such as John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis.
“Still Grazing,” is a music lover’s treat. Every chapter is filled with insider information that makes this book hard to put down.
Masekela is brutally honest with himself and his readers. His lessons learned, he looks forward to new beginnings in South Africa with a new recording label, studio and new talents to nurture and develop.
