1) Earth Wind & Fire, The Promise
It's been about 10 years since Earth Wind & Fire released a CD collection with all new studio songs.
Their latest CD (May, 2003), The Promise, offers melodic, engaging material, featuring the signature vocals of Maurice White and Philip Bailey.
I personally was looking for more uptempo material, but many of the softer songs are soulfully satisfying.
"All In The Way" kicks off the CD. This is probably the strongest track.
Angie Stone guest stars on "Wonderland," however, her role is little more than that of a celebrity background vocalist. I wanted to hear more of her.
Latin percussionist Paulinho Da Costa is prominently featured on several tracks. The song "Never" takes advantage of Paulinho's talents. This track is another good uptempo tune.
"The Promise" is a much more even collection, compared to some of the weaker Earth Wind and Fire material released in the mid to late 1980's, and early 1990's.
Most Earth Wind and Fire fans will find several songs to like here.
Of course, the band is now touring to support this CD. A few of their concert dates are featured in the concert section below.
Earth Wind and Fire have remained true to their unique sound. After 30 years plus, they are still going strong.

3) Powerhouse Radio and Live365
Our streaming provider, Live365, has made several changes effective June 1. Although listening to other online stations and avoiding their audio ads (commercials) may be a hassle (and cost you money in subscription fees)...
The good news for Powerhouse Radio listeners is:

2) You can listen to Powerhouse Radio at any time (without logging into Live365) by going to our website and clicking on "Listen to music."
3) You can download instant access to our website from our software download page.
4) Access is fre*e for everybody when you go through our website, or if you use the software we developed a year ago to access our site (and the music) in just two clicks.
5) The player through our website does not contain banner ads.
4) Music News: Ike Turner's not "Turning Japanese"
Ike Turner the troubled half of the legendary Ike & Tina Turner Review, was barred from entering Japan recently because of a 1990 cocaine conviction in the U.S.
Turner was questioned for five hours at Kansai International Airport in Osaka, and then was refused entry by immigration officials, who also revoked his work visa.
Turner had been scheduled to headline the 2003 Japan Blues Carnival. Ike's band played without him. Ticket holders were offered partial refunds.
Ike has posted a letter to his Japanese fans on his official website, thanking them for their support:

7) Music Maker: Blues Pioneers and R&B Icons
Before there was rhythm and blues, there was, the blues. Along side of jazz, blues was the dominant popular music of the day before 1950 in black communities in the USA.
This all changed once rock n' roll became popular in the late 1950's.
There's a great website dedicated to keeping the legacy of Southern blues pioneers alive. It's the Music Maker Relief Foundation.
You can listen to quite a few blues artists sing their songs (in mp3 format). This is my favorite feature of their website.
While you are there, check out their photo gallery, and learn about some of the great people who pioneered blues music.

8) What's Going On, part 2
We didn't have a winner last month for the easiest contest we've ever done, so you get one more chance to get the free CD's (now collecting dust in the Powerhouse Radio studio).
Do you know how many versions of "What's Going On" are included in the Powerhouse Radio master playlist?
Hint. Just go to:
2021 Update: Online playlist is sunset.
Enter "what's going on" (without the quotes) in the search box, and click on the flashlight. Finally, go to our newsletter feedback form: Your feedback
and tell me how many versions you found. One winner selected at random will win every CD we are playing that features "What's Going On" (from among those versions in our active playlist).
It's too easy. (Editor's note for our web or mobile readers, this contest is over).
